Do you want to be a Volunteer Community Mentor?
Do you know an adult who needs to meet and work with a mentor?
The Mentor Experience Involves
- Learning to be creative in developing and implementing lessons for adult learners, which may include utilizing state-of-the art learning software technology
- Coaching the adult learner to keep working and keeping appointments
- Counseling the learner on their completed work and progress
- Guiding and tutoring learners to an understanding of the importance and benefits of becoming a better learner, improving their life skills, and an understanding of how being a better learner can change their lives
- Keeping minimal records on the learner’s progress, and communicating and networking with the literacy coordinator and other mentors
The WITCC Adult Literacy Program recruits volunteer mentors and adult learners throughout the year, and arranges for them to meet and work together. Our goal is to have trained mentors on our mentor roster available to meet and work with individuals wanting to improve their basic math, reading, writing skills, or English skills. It can take tremendous courage for an individual to step forward and ask for help with improving their basic skills. That courage is met with a mentor who has the patience, sensitivity, and understanding to “coach, counsel, guide, and tutor,” those individuals wanting to become better learners and pursue their educational and/or learning goals.
Purpose
To help individuals who are 18 years of age or older improve
their basic math, reading, writing, or English skills, and
to help them reach and/or identify new educational or learning
goals.
Training
Mentors will be asked to attend an initial orientation/training
session. This session is approximately three hours in length
and is intended to help mentors establish a knowledge foundation
to “coach, counsel, guide, and tutor” new and/or developing
learners in the area of life skills and basic mathematics,
writing, or reading, or English skills. On-going mentor training
and support will be provided after the initial session. This
ongoing training and support helps mentors to continue to develop
their background and experience, and further their understanding
of the mentoring experience.

Commitment
The WITCC Adult Literacy program asks that you help us and
the adult learners we serve for at least six months. Mentors
will also be asked to meet with new and/or developing learners
at least two hours a week. This arrangement can be flexible
due to fluctuating schedules for the mentors and learners,
and/or newly developed programming locations and times.
